Weather and Climate for Murcia, Spain

Polaris World Murcia SpainOne of the key considerations for our clients when buying a Polaris World property is of course the climate.

You will often hear how the World Health Organisation rates the climate around the Mar Menor in Murcia, Spain, where the Polaris World resorts are located, as one of the healthiest in the world, with 300 days sunshine and average temperatures over 66°F.

But what do these averages mean in practical terms when spending lengthy periods of time in your home in the sun? We take a closer look at the weather statistics for the region of Murcia as actually recorded at the San Javier weather station each day throughout 2007:

Sunshine AND RAINFALL

Over 300 days sunshine a year? It looks like we are safely over this hurdle. In 2007 there were 72 days with any rain at all. Take out those days with less than 0.1 inches (a brief shower) and there were just 27 days of rain. We can't be sure, but as it's more likely to rain at night then we may experience 10 or 15 days a year with anything more than just a shower in the daytime.

Temperature

Summers are hot and dry with guaranteed temperatures. For the four months June, July, August and September in 2007 the maximum daily high in Murcia failed to achieve 75°F on just one day (September 22nd = 74°F). During these 4 months there were just 5 days with rainfall exceeding 0.1" or 12 days when there was any level of rain at all. In June and July there was no rain but in August (a very unusual August as anyone who experienced Spain then will tell you) an unusually high four days of rain although discounting the brief showers, just two days over 0.1"

It never freezes in Murcia but how low does the temperature go? In 2007 there were just 13 days when the night-time low temperature fell below 40°F (4°C); seven of those days were in December and six in January. It never fell below 40°F outside of those months.

Winter temperatures can be superb. During the three months December, January and February the daytime temperature climbed to over 60°F except for just one day in December and nine days in January. That's just ten days in the year when the temperature failed to reach 60°F. In fact, wake up in Murcia on any one day in those three months and it is almost three times more likely that the shade temperature will rise to 70°F or more, rather than stay below 60°F.

All temperatures are measured in the shade for weather statistics. That hides one of the key benefits to the climate in Murcia - it is invariably sunny. Take a sunny day in the UK during mid winter and the sun is too weak to have much effect on the temperature. While in Spain recently on New Year's Day with the shade temperature around 65°F, we conducted our own experiment under carefully controlled scientific conditions... and a few glasses of wine. Propping the thermometer up on the table directly in the sun it climbed to over 100°F! The fact is, it is sunny nearly every day in Murcia and in the Mediterannean sunshine in winter most hardened Brits will have no hesitation in getting down to shirt sleeves and flip flops!

The wettest months in Murcia tend to be autumn, late SeptemberOctober, November and early December although any rain downfalls during this period are usually short (but effective). September 2009 Being an extreme example. During Spring the temperature climbs from an already warm 70 degrees in March to often 80 degrees during April and rising further in May.

The weather in Murcia tends to be warmer and drier than the Costa Blanca beng slighty further south and compares favourably with the Costa del Sol
